About Us

Established in 2016, The People's Assembly's Youth Voice Team is a core group of youth and young adult organizers from Tacoma and the larger Pierce County area. The Youth Voice team was born from TPA's beginning efforts around engaging students from the Tacoma Public Schools in breaking down the school-to-prison-pipeline and building learning environments that are safe and supportive for all youth, especially Black youth. The Youth Voice Team is engaged in various grassroots organizing efforts centering on racial equity and social justice, especially as pertains to Black youth, and are the lead organizers of Youth Rise, The People’s Assembly annual youth summit, and community-based spaces, such as open mic, family-friendly paint-and-sip’s, and workshops focused on the school-to-prison pipeline, race/identity, power, and change-making.

The Youth Voice team organizes for change by building youth power and voice in schools and our communities. The team works with various community groups, individuals, and stakeholders to engage all community members in efforts that support equity and justice, with Black youth at the front and center of the movement. The Youth Voice team seeks to lead change and build community through:

  • Holding peer-supported spaces in community where youth and young adults can learn and organize together

  • Organizing and participating in events and activities that elevate youth voice around critical social justice

  • Celebrating, elevating, and raising the creativity and leadership of youth who are historically erased or excluded from mainstream community spaces, especially Black youth

  • Advocating for social change through direct action, creative resistance, and community-building
