Youth Voice INITIATIVE
Established in 2016, The People's Assembly's Youth Voice Initiative (YVI) is led by a core group of youth and young adult organizers from Tacoma and the larger Pierce County area. The YVI was born from TPA's beginning efforts around engaging students from the Tacoma Public Schools in breaking down the school-to-prison-pipeline and building learning environments that are safe and supportive for all youth, especially Black youth.
The YVI engages various systems, groups, and individuals in efforts that support equity and justice for youth in schools and our communities, creating space for Black youth at the front and center of the movement. The YVI seeks to build youth voice and power through:
Holding peer-supported spaces in community where youth and young adults can learn and organize together
Organizing and participating in events and activities that elevate youth voice around critical social justice
Celebrating, elevating, and raising the creativity and leadership of youth who are historically erased or excluded from mainstream community spaces, especially Black youth
Advocating for social change through direct action, creative resistance, and community-building
Currently, YVI organizes Youth Rise, a year-round program that holds space for Black/Brown youth to show up, build peer connections, share their voice, and organize for change through creative expression and resistance. YVI will also be launching a summer program, Rise Up, in summer 2019 which will offer a safe and supportive space for youth ages 8-14 to engage in activities that connect to community and inspire action for social justice.
